  58. Hi Erik! Jim is right if you are interested in SSB work as it is nearly
  59. impossible to convert from AM to SSB (at least cost prohibitive).
  60. However, there are a lot of 10 meter FM repeaters around the globe and
  61. they can be a lot of fun. I just converted a small CB to install in my
  62. van for a local 10 meter repeater that I am putting up. It only cost a
  63. few bucks, and the conversion to FM from AM was very simple. Look in the
  64. Ham mags and you'll see a company called CBC International. They
  65. specialize in CB to 10 meter conversions and have all the goodies that

  87. First of all, I personally have used only TWO logging programs written
  88. for the Macintosh - neither of which will totally satisfy you.
  89.  
  90. The first is QLOG - a general purpose logging program which was written
  91. using Fox-Base and is painfully slow and I do not know if it is even
  92. being supported.  Last I heard, it was still be offered by:

  98. Please be aware that I have repeatedly tried to contact these people and
  99. even sent an SASE - but without response. However, recently another ham
  100. in that area called them and was told that they still sell QLOG, but are

  104. My personal favorite is the Marathon contest logging program for the 
  105. Macintosh written by Kevin Krueger N0IOS.  If he would put a "DXpedition"
  106. mode in it and possibly a utility to print QSL labels, we would be in
  107. "fat city".  ;-)

  149. did I capitalize the N and A?) An xmtr I'm building calls for 2N2222A's
  150. but all I have are dozens of 2N2222's (from dumpster diving behind

  346. again until about 1999.  That's not to say that you can't work any DX, but
  347. openings to Europe or Asia will be very rare.  Openings to the South are still

  359.         Here's a design question. I am looking at the front-end RF amp
  360. which uses a 2N3904 and asking myself if I were to replace this with a
  361. transistor with a lower noise figure, say a 2N5179 or BF689, will I see
  362. any improvement? Is this mod worth pursuing? How much improvement can I
  363. expect to see here?

  376. Who told you there is a scanner law for N VA?  No gov. body has a covers
  377. just N VA.  I have lived in this area for 6 years and never heard of
  378. such a law here.  You need to provide more information as it sounds like
  379. someone has told you something that is simply not true.

  421. I think voice mail on a repeater would be a good thing as soon as the
  422. hams using that system had automatic unit ID equipment installed.
  423.  
  424. One could easily do that by transmitting a burst of 9600 bps AX.25
  425. packet - a UI frame or equivalent - at the beginning of each
  426. transmission.  You'd never have to say your callsign again, and the
  427. repeater could automatically tell you if you had voice mail.

  429. Using touchtones would be stupid and annoying.
